Panama Canal Completed with a Bang
An American-built waterway across the Isthmus of Panama, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, is completed with the explosion of the Gamboa Dike. U.S. President Woodrow Wilson triggered the blast by pressing an electric button at the White House in Washington, D.C., concluding one of the largest construction projects of all time.

First flight of the Graf Zeppelin
On October 12, 1928, the Graf Zeppelin, the first commercial dirigible to cross the Atlantic, embarked on its maiden voyage. The Zeppelin, named after its inventor, Ferdinand von Zeppelin, made more than five hundred transatlantic passenger flights before it was retired in favor of the hydrogen-inflated Hindenburg.
